REN SUMNER

SATELLITE FOUNDATION YOUTH AMBASSADOR

Satellite Foundation is a not-for-profit that connects and empowers children and young people who have a family member living with mental health challenges.

Satellite Foundation helps children and young people amplify their voices and share their lived and living experiences of mental health through the extraordinary power of creative expression and meaningful connections. They do that by offering FREE in-person and online programs, workshops, activities, and projects for young people to come together – connecting over shared experiences.

Ren Sumner is a Youth Ambassador for Satellite's upcoming expansion of its zine "All the Coloured Glasses", as well as a member of the organisation’s Youth Advisory Council. We chatted with Ren to understand how Satellite makes young people feel welcome, gives them a sense of belonging, mutual understanding and genuine connection to others that may be going through similar experiences.

What 3 words would you use to describe Satellite Foundation?

Connected, creative & warm.

How do you embrace creativity and connection at Satellite Foundation?

Through sharing our creative works we can share our stories because sometimes words can only say so much. Satellite Foundation also really goes off the idea that connection is fostered through creation.

What's Satellite Foundation’s purpose?

Satellite Foundation’s purpose is to work together with young people to support their individual & ongoing growth. We want every young person to have access to safe and creative and inclusive spaces for brave conversations. We hope to enhance their mental health and wellbeing, as well as their connectedness.

Who is Satellite Foundation for?

Satellite Foundation is for children and young people aged 8-25 who have family with mental health challenges. We understand this can also include those in families experiencing childhood substance abuse, family conflict or violence, complex trauma or other adverse life circumstances.

What are 3 things you do to prioritise your mental health?

Making sure I pay attention to my own needs and my own feelings (in certain situations that can be really difficult to do - so it’s important to acknowledge when I do need a break or when I need to step away from a situation.) Focusing on creativity and allowing myself to have time to have creative outlets and enjoy them without having the pressure to make them perfect. I just have these to express myself. Connection. Really connecting with my chosen family and things that make me really happy such as my friends, my colleagues, my pets ESPECIALLY. I love connecting with those types of things that just make me feel like I have a purpose and like I belong in my community.

What’s your advice for someone hoping to start and continue conversations about mental health with their family?

Make sure that the conversation is in a nice environment and make sure everyone’s chill before you start. And make sure you take it slow and take care of yourself, recognising your own needs in the situation.

How can we check in with our family & friends on how we and they are doing?

I like to be checked up on by my friends in a very calm and friendly way. Usually when we’re talking one-on-one with each other in a calm and quiet setting that we’re both comfortable. [I like] when it’s not kind of out of the blue, we’re having a deep conversation and it’s a heart-to-heart. [It’s important] that I can trust them and talk to them openly.
