in conversation

Get to know one of the KINDEST people ever - Nikoletta Apostolidis (she/her).

Nikoletta is an advisory board member for Born This Way Foundation and studying a bachelor of Psychology (Honours). She has a passion for working with children, young people and LGBTQIA+ communities, empowering them to express their authentic emotions. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Nikoletta to talk all about Born This Way Foundation.

How did you become involved with Born This Way Foundation?

I am deeply involved with volunteering in different mental health organisations across Melbourne and nationally across Australia, and the idea of getting to work with a team internationally was super exciting! I had been following the Born This Way Foundation social media and learning about the foundation for quite a while, so when I saw that the applications were open for the Advisory Board, I decided to apply! I’ve also been a huge Lady Gaga fan for years, and I was inspired by how Gaga has used her platform to support and elevate the voices of young people through Born This Way Foundation.

What do you love about Born This Way Foundation?

What I love most about Born This Way Foundation is definitely the people; the Born This Way Foundation team and other advisors are so kind and caring. Their dedication to promoting a kinder and braver world translates into their work, and everyone is so supportive of each other.

What led you to study psychology?

After facing my own mental health challenges as a teenager, I began learning about the importance of mental wellbeing, especially in maintaining holistic health. The psychology field is so interesting and my interests are always growing; at the moment, I’m most interested in trauma prevention and recovery as I believe in the importance of making our communities safer for everyone.

How do you show kindness to yourself and to others?

I show kindness to others by being there for them and holding space for them when they are having a hard time. Similarly, I show kindness to myself by ensuring that I make time in my day to rest and recharge, and listen to my body and its needs. I also enjoy spending time outside and being in nature, simply noticing things; the birds, or the trees. When I’m feeling down, I always talk to a friend or turn on some music to improve my mood.

Can you name a moment someone's shown you kindness that's stuck with you?

For me, it’s the small ways that people show kindness towards me that I always remember and appreciate most; checking in on me, sharing good news with me, or spending time with me while we do something fun together!

What are 3 words you'd use to describe your bestie (Alex)?

Alex is the most supportive, warm, and funny person I know. We always have a blast when we’re together!

Why do you think people should earn their Be There Certificate?

The Be There Certificate is a great way to build skills in identifying when and how to support others through mental health challenges, while also strengthening self-care skills. The combination of videos and text makes it engaging and relatable. Regardless of age, I believe the Be There Certificate can help everyone learn and build on important skills.
